​​Our goal is to deliver graduate training that equips a new generation of researchers with the skills needed to drive forward the frontiers of bioscience and to translate their research into high impact applications. Modern bioscience is interdisciplinary, quantitative and fastmoving. Facilitated by technological innovation, ever-increasing amounts of data and growing application of computational tools, bioscience research in the 21st century requires multi- and inter-disciplinary teams of researchers that are capable of integrating data across multiple scales. We therefore need to train a new generation of scientists, who can not only understand the underlying science, but also have the technical, quantitative and computational skills and knowledge needed to innovate, lead and work within these teams. Additionally, we need to equip researchers with the professional, enterprise and transferable skills to enable their engagement with other sectors and society and to increase their mobility across disciplines.

All members of our partnership have excellent track records in the development and use of interdisciplinary approaches to address research challenges, and in delivering high-quality doctoral training. Together, we will continue to train a new generation of curiosity-driven, brave and collaborative researchers to work and lead in interdisciplinary teams and develop the integrative, multi-scale approaches that are needed for the scientific breakthroughs of the future.

Our Doctoral Training Programme is based around five guiding principles:

  1. Interdisciplinarity & Collaboration. Modern bioscience requires interactions within large, multi-disciplinary teams, project partners and stakeholders. Our students are encouraged to engage in multi-disciplinary collaborations and to share their expertise.
  2. Innovation. Innovation arises at the intersection of information, technologies and disciplines, and is driven by the desire to solve problems and overcome challenges. Our students will be empowered to explore new research areas, develop new skills and use new technologies, and to acquire the skills needed to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
  3. Excellence. Our students will be fully trained to carry out world-leading research into important bioscience research questions using state-of-the-art technology. They will develop a clear understanding of best practice in experimental design, data analysis and curation, ethical implications, research integrity, the need for reproducible approaches and the ability to critically evaluate their findings in the context of existing knowledge.
  4. Inclusion. A diverse staff and student body strengthens research, enhances our students’ learning and is key to drive innovation in bioscience research. Our students are recruited from a wide and diverse pool of the best talent. They are provided with a supportive learning environment to allow them to reach their full potential.
  5. Impact. An understanding of the social, ethical and economic context of scientific research and the ability to engage with different communities, are essential skills for modern researchers. Our students will develop and practise the skills needed to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and to realise the impact of their ideas through knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship.
