During years two to four, all students undertake a twelve-week internship to gain experience of work in a professional environment and in transferable skills that will be beneficial in their future careers. Areas that may be explored during internships include industrial research and development, science policy, science communication, publishing, entrepreneurship and project management. During the foundation phase, all students will attend our internship event that provides a detailed overview of the programme, advice on employability skills and their links to internships, and presentations from students who have undertaken internships in different sectors.
All students have access to the DTP internship database that lists previous and offered internships. Students also have also access to specific internship databases including CareerConnect through the University of Oxford Careers Service and The Summer Internship Programme, which provides access to hundreds of internship opportunities in the UK and abroad. The DTP has also formed a new partnership with the Oxford Foundry to offer internship opportunities with Oxford University-founded start-ups. When students are ready to undertake an internship the student and host organisation develop an ‘Internship Plan’ setting out the internship aims and learning milestones, which is reviewed by the DTP Directorate before a placement is approved.
